Who are invisible soldiers?![]() Photo Credit: http://www.ngb.army.mil/ Invisible soldiers are gay and lesbian men and women serving in our armed forces that are forced to conceal who they are under the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy. If they are even suspected for homosexual activity, they will be investigated and likely discharged. Not only do they have to hide who they are while they are in active duty or on a military base, they have to be careful in the civilian world as well. Actions in the civilian world can get them discharged just as quickly. They become invisible to keep their careers. As a nation we ignore their struggle for the right to serve us. They are willing to make the ultimate sacrafice, and in return we ask them to pretend to not be themselves. We force them to live as quietly as possible. After these people voluntarily go where they are not wanted to follow the calling to protect us, we thank them by shoving them back into the closet. As a society we are indifferent to the difficulties of hiding who you are to appease homophobic military leaders.
How can we help make the invisible soldiers visible? There are a couple easy things you can do to help get rid of the ban on gays and lesbians in the army. You can sign the petition organized by the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network found here. You can also call your local Congressmen and let them know you want them to support the Military Readiness Enhancement Act currently making its way through the House of Representatives. |
